WEATHER ALERT: HCC closed Tuesday, Jan. 16; will provide update this evening about Wednesday, Jan. 17

Due to inclement weather, Houston Community College was closed on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

HCC is monitoring the impact of the current winter weather conditions in Houston and will provide an update this evening about the operating schedule of our facilities for Wednesday, Jan. 17. Stay tuned to hccs.edu and be safe.

A cold front hit the Greater Houston area early Tuesday morning and brought with it freezing temperatures and a wintery mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow, which could fall from Tuesday morning through Wednesday.

While ground temperatures are expected to remain too warm to cause roadways to ice, here are some driving tips from the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management that can help keep you safe in slippery driving conditions:

  • Give yourself extra stopping distance. Wet conditions means it takes longer for vehicles to come to a complete stop.
  • Ensure windshield wipers are in good working condition before heading out on the road.
  • When conditions are wet or dark, be sure to use headlights. Never use high beams in urban areas.
  • While it’s not currently expected, remember that highway overpasses and bridges pose the highest risk of icing. Take extra precautions when driving over them.
  • Slow down. Rain, sleet and snow can limit visibility, giving drivers less time to recognize danger. Slowing down gives provides extra time to adjust to changing conditions.

HCC urges all students, staff and faculty to exercise caution during these cold weather conditions. Be safe out there!
